1996 Oldsmobile Aurora
The Problem:
The car overheats while the car in driving on the freeway and/or streets. My mechanic said that the water is leaking.
The Fixes:
I already spent a great deal of money to replace and rebuilt the top half of the engine (complete head job and replaced gaskets), replaced the thermostat, replaced the computer so that the fans turn on way before, replaced the radiator, replaced radiator cap.
The Question:
What is wrong with my car? And where could the leak be coming from?
A Big Overheating Mystery?windows
Is it still leaking? Does your coolant level still go down?
Sounds like the mechanic has basically replaced and/or fixed the entire cooling system, except the heater core.
Check it yourself:
Starting with a cold engine
1. remove the rad. cap
2. start the engine, turn the heater on high
3. fill the rad. with coolant, (engine needs to be running to work out any air in the system)
4. replace the rad. cap
5. run the car far enough to heat it up and make it back to your parking spot just as it overheats. Shut the engine off.
6. try and find if and where it is leaking. Check for wet spots around all hoses, the rad., heater core (inside the car, under your dash, inside the plastic housing is your heater fan and heater core, its like another small rad.)
