How does someone's name affect your first impression of him/her?

We often find ourselves in situations where we have little more than a name with which to form an impression of someone - penpal lists, resumes where everyone seems equally suitable for the job, a selection of lectures by equally knowledgeable lecturers with equally fascinating backgrounds from which you are expected to select one....the list goes on. We often speak of unconscious gender or race biases, but might we also have preconceptions based merely on names?

Below are lists of ten female names and ten male names. All of these names were picked at random.

Select:

1)One (of your gender) for a friend

2)One for a romantic partner

3)Two (one of each gender) as employees

4)Two (one of each gender) to become your lecturers

If you are able to, please explain your choices.

Female names:

Elizabeth, Brenda, Jean, Lucy, Aurora, Stephanie, Morgan, Carol, Alexis, Barbara

Male names:

Steve, Zachary, Miguel, Daniel, Luke, Robert, Gregory, Larry, Paul, Antonio
