My fiancee and I are tight on money. Should we sell one of our cars?

His car is payed off, and is a 1999 Dodge Avenger. Due to poor car decisions in the past and getting in over my head, I am currently "upside-down" in my car loan (which also has other loans grouped into it). My vehicle is a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0L. I like my car much better than I like his, but his is the one that is paid off. Looking at some figures, I believe I could sell mine for around $8500. I owe $18,000 (but as I said, some other loans were lumped in and consolidated with that. My payment is $400 a month, plus $120 a month for insurance, not to mention gas. If i sell my car, I'll still have to pay on that loan, but the monthly payment would be cheaper and I wouldn't have the added expense of insurance. What is the better decision here? It seems to me that if we sell a car, it should be mine, but I'm not even sure about that. We are just trying to get our finances in order so we start our married-life off on the right path.

you need to consider how much each car would cost to maintain as well as how much capital the sale would release. it could be the older car costs more in the long run because it will need more maintenance. however a 4 litre car will use more fuel than one with a smaller engine.

you also need to think about the cost of getting around - can you car share or will one of you have to use public transport?

it certainly makes sense to sell one of the cars and use the cash to pay off some of your loan.
NEVER sale a paid off car! and i highly doubt you can sell that car for that price (i'd say less than 4000 you get for that car). the montly price wouldnt be cheaper. you'd still have to pay the agreed upon price. Here is a good idea. quit buying cars you cant afford and stop living above your means
